Roughing up metal surfaces is essential to primer adhesion.

No matter what anyone tells you, unless you are using some sort of industrial “etching” paint, you are expected to sand the metal surface with something like 400 grit sandpaper.

Make sure to not use sandpaper containing any iron or iron oxides as these will implant small particles right into your aluminum and potentially corrode.
