Separate VHF and UHF antennas for Station 6 of the 2011 ATGP

This is a portrait of the two antennas used for the Appalachian Trail Golden Packet event.

The tall one is the same 2m collinear J-Pole used the previous two years. It is a traditional Super-J using 1/2 inch copper plumbing pipe. The PVC bottom electrically isolates the J-Pole avoiding the well known mast current problems.

The four ropes guy the assembly about 2/3 up the total height. This design avoids need for tress or other existing supports.

The smaller antenna is the last minute add on mini-Super-J for 70cm. It is just one piece of hardened solid copper wire bent into the proper shape and fed with a folded balun (aka Pawsey stub).

The blow up section reveals the simple, but adequate method to support the 70cm antenna using a simple twist of one guy rope.

Viewers may wonder if a simple dual-band antenna may be more appropriate. It is. I just like building antennas.
