The DX Engineering 43 foot antenna documentation suggests 23 inches, but this disagrees with the actual measurements of all the components they use to derive this number. Also, the balun leads are stretched when using 23 inches. So 21 inches is it.
With a 55 inch pipe this leaves 34 inches in the ground.
