While possible to measure back from the end of each dowel, it is much simpler to just mark a piece of paper with the proper locations for the holes. We chose a 5 inch spacing on the wires.
Once the template was drawn in our notebook, it is quick work to mark all the hole positions.
We ensured all holes were drilled through as many grain layers as possible to reduce the chance of splitting the wood dowel.
